EUROFLEETS2: New operational steps towards an alliance of European research fleets

Acronim: EUROFLEETS

EUROFLEETS2 project represents the continuation and improvement of EUROFLEETS1, aiming to develop a new pan-European distributed research infrastructure with a common strategic vision and coordinated access to research vessels and marine equipment.

EUROFLEETS2 will undertake specific actions aimed at strengthening the organisation, methodology and tools of the vessels through operational experimental tests (such as virtual fleets) leading to a fully interoperable and cost-effective European research fleet.

  • Promoting the integration of global, oceanic and regional research fleets (RVs). Additional European RVs are accessible under EUROFLEETS2: 8 oceanic/global (4 more than in EUROFLEETS1), 14 regional RVs (6 new) and 6 mobile equipment (5 new).

  • Proposing a further integration across multiple platforms – the super-integration call will seek to identify a major, truly innovative proposal based on scientific excellence, to be carried out by an international partnership of elite scientists;

  • Finalizing the strategic vision of European fleets with a common polar component;

  • Promoting the exchanges of mobile equipment on board of the European research vessels to encourage operational interoperability through transnational access;

  • Improving the impact of the research fleets on innovation by promoting the industry involvement in specific activities, both as an end-user (e.g. development and testing of new equipment or deep exploration for new resources) and as a supplier. The already functioning EUROFLEETS industrial interest club will be further improved, expanded and promoted;;

  • Launching new training actions, including a pilot floating university, as well as new technological innovations;

  • Taking an important step towards a long-term sustainable and financially autonomous group of European research vessels. With a view to requesting inclusion in the ESFRI roadmap. EUROFLEETS2 will involve multi-disciplinary expertise.
