Multiproxy reconstruction of Eurasian MEGALAKES connectivity and isolation patterns during Neogene-Quaternary times

Acronim: PNRR - 97/15.11.2022

This project aims to investigate geological records of the Paratethys and Euxine (Black Sea) megalakes, by using a multidisciplinary approach, which integrates high-resolution biostratigraphy, organic geochemistry and geochemical proxies, combined with geochronology, palaeomagnetism and Ar/Ar dating.

Scientific methods

Multidisciplinary investigations focused on the geochronology (magnetostratigraphy, tephrochronology and stratigraphy), biostratigraphy (micro- and nannofossils), organic and inorganic geochemistry (87Sr/86Sr and 187Os/188Os analyses, stable isotopes), sedimentology, petrography, paleomagnetism and paleogeographic reconstructions.

The project aims to answer the following questions:

  • What happens during and after the formation of megalakes due to the disconnection of marginal seas from the planetary ocean?
  • What happens during and after the disappearance of megalakes due to reconnection with the planetary ocean?
  • What is the rate of endemism?
  • What were the impacts and implications of the observed paleohydrological changes beyond the Paratethys-Euxinic region?
