Bathymetry and Acoustic Seismic Team

The seismo-acoustics team conducts research for marine geology and geo-ecology using seismo-acoustic methods – through echosounding with mono and multibeam sonar, sediment probe, side-scan sonar -, accompanied by other auxiliary measurements, mainly for determining the physical properties of the water column and the speed of sound.

Complex marine geological surveys, highly detailed bathymetric maps, seismo-acoustic sections, side-scan sonar image mosaics, bottom sediment distribution maps, classified by seismo-acoustic methods, are carried out, the team providing base maps for marine research.

The activity is carried out through fundamental or applied research projects, signed with national and international contracting authorities, but also with private sector companies.

The team also provides technical support to other teams in the institute regarding the use of these methods.
