The Paleoecology, Paleogeography and Paleobiology department makes sedimentological, paleontological and geochemical studies. These studies are essential for the understanding of the history of the Earth, focusing on the climate and palaeo-medium change. The team carries on studies of sedimentary, stratigraphic and palaeobiological processes, both in the marine and continental environment, at different scales of time and space, from local to basin scale.
Our work consists of a combination of field observations, computer modelling and multivariate statistics. The main objectives are related to the evolution of life on Earth and climate change, as well as to the geological research of energy resources, geohazard assessment and mapping of marine habitats.
