Acronim: EASTERN LIGHTS
Financed under Horizon Europe Framework Programme, EASTERN LIGHTS project is a crucial first step towards a large-scale onshore CCUS cluster in Eastern Europe. This initiative, centered in North West Bulgaria and driven by a powerful collaboration of 19 organisations across 8 countries, will de-risk development by demonstrating CO₂ transport and storage capabilities. By uniting diverse expertise, Eastern Lights aims to eliminate key uncertainties through industrial demonstration, in-depth research, and proactive stakeholder engagement.
Objectives:
- Selection of CO2 storage sites
- Support the development of the regulatory process for CO2 permitting in East Europe
- Develop and test CO2 cross-border transport and injection procedures
- Provide the proof of concept for large-scale CO2 storage operations
- The biggest Eastern European CCUS-cluster development
- Promote public-acceptance and engagement
- Create systems to monitor the full-scale operation from source to sink
- Assess the potential for geothermal energy production coupled with the CO2 injection
Results:
- Provide insights on the (cross-border) transportation of CO2 via different methods;
- Successful demonstration of transportation and injection of (captured) CO2 in saline aquifer;
- Increased public acceptance;
- Establish a CCUS Academy;
- Establish the biggest CCUS Cluster in Eastern Europe;
- Provide policy recommendations towards national authorities with regards to CO2 transportation and storage legislation.
