Rareș Șuvăilă este fizician nuclearist, specializat în radioactivitatea mediului și probleme conexe, corelații clasice și cuantice, sisteme de detecție complexe și în fond scăzut. Domeniul principal de activitate este investigarea concentrațiilor de elemente TENORM în diverse ecosisteme, analiza de sediment și carote în scopuri de datare și reconstituirea dinamicii poluanților, inclusiv microplastice. De asemenea, el este implicat în dezvoltarea sistemelor de detecție și monitorizare a radioactivității din mediul marin.
