Acronim: MONOCLE
MONOCLE project brings together 12 organisations from Europe and Africa to develop sustainable solutions for monitoring surface water quality through measurements of their optical characteristics. The project uses a combination of satellite measurements, beacons, boats, drones and portable devices. Field instruments range from highly accurate automated systems, used mostly by researchers, to solutions involving low-cost sensors, solutions that can be accessed and operated by representatives of the general public.
- The main objective of MONOCLE is to achieve a more efficient integration of the in-situ measurements with the satellite data thus generating a better assessment of the water quality;
- Developing a series of optical sensors to ensure the highest possible accuracy of field measurements, as well as the development of alternative technologies with very low costs, that will be part of a wide network that can be used in national monitoring programs by specialists and citizens. This is the innovative aspect of the project – involving citizens in monitoring the environmental quality, and in particular in monitoring the surface waters.
