Biology – Ecology Team

The team’s research activity extends from the Danube River to the Black Sea, from the individual to the whole ecosystem, as we try to understand the connections within the complex biological systems, so that we, as society, can prepare and adapt to the challenges that we might face in the future.

The team is comprised by biological and ecological researchers specialized in the analysis of pelagic and benthal species and habitats, their spatial and temporal distribution and the dynamics and trends of the evolution of aquatic ecosystems at local, regional and in relation to the global changes. The team also facilitates and supports the biology education at Ovidius University in Constanta.

The team carries out the following research activities:

Fundamental research:

  • study of biodiversity (zooplankton, macrozoobenthos and meiobenthos) and its evolutionary trends;
  • mapping of the main benthic habitats;
  • assessing the state of pelagic and benthic habitats in order to determine the support capacity of river, lake and marine ecosystems;
  • assessment of the environmental stress and ecosystem vulnerability;
  • environmental protection and nature conservation (protected marine areas).

Applied research – developing measures for the recovery and sustainable use of biological resources.
