The Department of Marine Geology and Geoecology – Oceanography includes equipment for oceanographic, sedimentological, biological, paleontological and geochemical studies. These studies are essential for the knowledge of the Romanian continental shelf through the elaboration of geological-sedimentological, geophysical, hydro-chemical, biological and geo-ecological maps, as well as detailed bathymetric knowledge.
The department focuses on developing maps at a scale of 1:50,000 to understand the structure and functioning of benthic biocenoses, knowledge of the mechanisms of dispersion and fixation of pollutants in sediments, knowledge of sedimentation processes, complementing information on the potential of the country’s mineral resources with inventory and knowledge of marine resources, establishing the theoretical basis necessary to ensure the sustainable exploitation of the marine environment protecting specific ecosystems, and as well as obtaining a unified database (geological, geophysical, geo-ecological and biological) for the various aspects of the Romanian marine area.
