Halmyris

Laboratory houseboat

The “Halmyris” laboratory houseboat was donated to GeoEcoMar by the Ministry of Defence in 1996. It is stationed by the Sf. Gheorghe Branch in Murighiol (Uzlina), Tulcea County.

Scientific facilities and construction

 The houseboat was built in 1951. The houseboat body structure was initially made of ship steel. During the transformation process from a navy ship into a laboratory (period 1996-1998), its structure became a mixed one, as a result of the use of the welded joint process during the works. „Halmyris” was fully upgraded in 2016.

Following the transformation works, Halmyris hosts a multifunctional laboratory on board (biology, geochemistry, sedimentology) and is equipped with an electric generator and an air conditioning system.

The laboratory pontoon has 8 cabins with own bathrooms  that can host 14 staff, a multifunctional mess (study / dining table), a kitchen and motor boats.

Its main characteristics are:

  • Length: 32 meters;
  • Width: 6.60 meters;
  • Draft; 0.60 meters;
  • Displacement: 90 tons.
