Danubius-RI
- Preparing the participation of Romania, as coordinator, in the development of the DANUBIUS-RI distributed pan-European infrastructure through the implementation of the Major Project of Structural Funds for the Romanian component of DANUBIUS-RI (Hub, Data Center and the Danube Delta Supersite).
- The development of the Romanian component of DANUBIUS-RI has the following effects: the in-depth study of the processes that influence the evolution of ecosystems in wetlands – river, delta/lagoon, coastal areas and the sea under the influence of rivers; the development of a knowledge-based economy that will support sustainable economic growth in the Danube – Danube Delta – Black Sea system, while protecting the biodiversity and the characteristic natural ecosystems; master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral programs in collaboration with universities across Europe; conferences, specialized training courses, workshops, summer schools, etc.; e-learning and ecological educational programs for the local communities;
The DANUBIUS-RI Preparatory Phase (DANUBIUS-PP) has developed the structures and processes to ensure that DANUBIUS-RI can deliver an integrated understanding of the functioning of River-Sea Systems and address the key societal challenges associated with, and opportunities of, RS systems.
DANUBIUS-PP was a three-year project, started in December 2016, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No 739562 aiming to raise DANUBIUS-RI to the legal, financial and technical maturity required for successful implementation and development
DANUBIUS RO-2 project responds to the national commitments assumed by Romania, as the coordinating state of the European research infrastructure DANUBIUS-RI, and supports the transition from the preparatory to the operational phase.
DANUBIUS-RO national infrastructure is currently under development, with the essential components – the Hub, the Danube Delta Supersite and the Data Center being in various stages of technical and logistical preparation -, while in June 2025 the official establishment of DANUBIUS ERIC was internationally recognized.
Within this project, GeoEcoMar is responsible for coordinating the activities for the Work Package 2 (WP2), which aims to strengthen the legal, institutional and administrative framework of the infrastructure in accordance with European ESFRI standards. The aim is to carry out the current activities of DANUBIUS ERIC and to gradually transfer the responsibilities to the DANUBIUS-ERIC staff who will be employed, as well as to develop links with other European research infrastructures.
GeoEcoMar is responsible for organising and operationalising DANUBIUS-ERIC, coordinating ESFRI and ENVRI-BEERI collaborations and maintaining relations with pan-European infrastructures. GeoEcoMar will thus carry out, together with the other partners, the following two activities:
- Activity 2.1. ERIC international support; All actions needed to organise and operationalise DANUBIUS-ERIC will be coordinated by GeoEcoMar.
- Activity 2.2. Synergies with other ERICS and ESFRI projects (pan-European research infrastructures) in the field of environment; Coordination of collaborations at the level of ESFRI and ENVRI-BEERI (Board of European Environmental Research Infrastructures) will continue to be ensured by GeoEcoMar in line with the responsibilities previously exercised.
DANUBIUS RO-2 is a support project that has no research activities and is exclusively dedicated to the operational and functional preparation of the national infrastructure, as an integral part of the DANUBIUS-RI network.
