PN18160201 – Multidisciplinary research (sedimentological, geochemical and paleo-biological) of the anoxic intervals in the Carpathian-Ponto-Danubian area and of the hydrocarbon potential
Acronim: GEODEMAN
The project aims to carry out multidisciplinary research on the anoxic intervals in the Carpathian-Ponto-Danubian area that are necessary to highlight the hydrocarbon potential.
- Identifying the anoxic events that occurred during the Cretaceous and Tertiary, including the PETM (Anoxic event at the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, also known as the Thermal Maximus Interval) in the Carpatho-ponto-danubian area, based on the analysis of representative sequences;
- Detailed in-situ investigations of some successions where the Oligocene-Lower Miocene deposits outcrop in Romania, that are necessary to observe the changes that occurred during the transition from an oxic environment (Upper Eocene) to an anoxic one (Lower Oligocene), as well as to highlight the intermediate (dysoxic) intervals in the Upper Oligocene and Lower Miocene;
- Highlighting the climate changes in the Cretaceous and Tertiary based on microfossil fluctuations (especially calcareous algae coccolithophyceae, as well as ostracods and foraminifera) and specific geochemical analyses (18O and 13C isotopes, n-alkali);
- Investigations on the sapropelic muds from the Black Sea basin (in cores taken from the Romanian continental shelf) and observations on sedimentological, paleo-microfaunistic and nannofloristic changes, concomitantly with the establishment of anoxicity in the largest anoxic basin in the world, the Black Sea;
