PN18160302 – Research on the accumulation of biogenic methane and the methane hydrates formation from sediments in the exclusive economic zone of Romania at the Black Sea: geo-climatic and ecological implications
Acronim: GEODEMAN
The project aims to carry out research on the accumulation of biogenic methane and the methane hydrates formation from sediments in the exclusive economic area of Romania at the Black Sea, with a focus on the geo-climatic and ecological implications.
- Outlining the most active areas in terms of methane emissions from sediments, which may be related to the presence of methane hydrates;
- Quantifying the methane flow from these seeps in at least a few places;
- Correlating the known structural elements (mainly fissures, but also the elements related to the seabed morphology) with the methane springs and connecting them with the local accumulations of clatrates (identified by Bottom Simulating Reflectors – BSR anomalies);
- 3D model of the spatial distribution of methane hydrates in the exclusive economic zone with a breakdown at the limit of the hydrate stability zone – GHSZ;
- Creating conceptual geological models regarding the connection between methane outbursts at the seabed level and the presence of BSR anomalies and clathrates;
- Assessing the geo-climatic and ecological impact of the biogenic methane and clathrate coupling.
