PN19200202-Study of the geodynamic regime in Dobrogea, its influence on paleogeographic changes produced in the Black Sea coastal area, the Danube Delta included, as well as on the presence and human activities
Acronim: GEOBIOECOMAR
The project involved an interdisciplinary study of the evolution of recent paleogeographic changes produced in the coastal area and in the Danube Delta that was carryed out by investigating the structure and content of the Holocene sedimentary quverture, as well as by determining the geodynamic regime.
- Processing of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data recorded within the GeoPontica permanent station network to determine current crustal movements of the coastal and deltaic area. The activity results are highlighted by the creation of maps of the horizontal and vertical crustal movements;
- High-detail magnetometric surveys (in the terrestrial domain with Geometrics G-856 and aquatic with Geometrics G-882) in the areas of interest in order to highlight the cultural heritage structures or to determine the deposition patterns of magnetic and heavy minerals in the sedimentary sequences studied. The activity results are highlighted through maps of the total magnetic field, magnetic gradient, analytical signal and other maps of the components derived from the total magnetic field;
- Shallow drilling (1 – 15 m) carried out with a percussion core drilling system, with the help of which the continuous cores are taken from the areas of interest, then sampled multiple times and sent for complex laboratory analyses (granulometric, mineralogical, geochemical, micropaleontological, etc.). These analyses aim to extract the inscribed information in the sediments, with paleogeographic, paleoenvironmental and geoarchaeological relevance;
- The introduction and use of new research equipment to support the application of new research methodologies that will form and/or consolidate the expertise of groups of researchers: magnetic susceptibility measurements with a Bartington susceptibility meter in the areas of interest, but also on cores taken from the respective areas by means of a specialized sensor, followed by the creation of maps with the distribution of susceptibility in the areas of interest and susceptibility graphs of the cores; aero-magnetic measurements, carried out with the ultra-light GEM Systems GSMP-35U magnetometer, airborne by the DJI Matrice 600 Pro drone;
- The geophysical studies and the results of the complex analyses will allow the identification of the cultural heritage elements buried or located on the seabed, establishing the presence and extension of possible cultural horizons and/or archaeological sites;
- The resulting data will be materialized in thematic map atlases illustrating the nature and distribution of different types of sediments, spatial variation of different physical properties (morphology of magnetic field, magnetic susceptibility, conductivity, etc.), granulometry, content in certain chemical elements, biodiversity and biomass at certain times, etc. characteristic of the studied environment, lithostratigraphic columns of artefact catalogues and 2D and 3D models of the shallow structure;
- The integrated interpretation of all the results (geodynamic, geophysical, sedimentological, biological, isotopic, etc.) will make it possible to develop a paleo-geographical and paleo-climatic evolution model of the studied area which, once the activities continue in the coming years, can be successively refined and improved.
